Together in Learning, Together in Christ
Hello all! Welcome to my sixth grade class page. My name is Ms. Gioffre and I am proud to be your child's teacher this year. I have a Bachelor's Degree in History, a Masters' Degree in Adolecesent Education, and a Masters' Degree in Early Childhood Education. Teaching is my life, love, and passion, and I seek to help my students acheieve their personal and educational goals. I strive to provide a positive classroom envrionment, academic challenges for growth, and a social atmosphere that encourages maturity and responsibility.
In sixth grade, students are ready to deepen their understanding of the Earth and its peoples through the study of history, geography, politics, culture, and economic systems. Through world history and geography, we grow and apprecation and understanding for human life and development, as we learn how the world today is shaped by our past.
Our course of study in language arts for sixth grade includes a combination of components, from reading and writing, to grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. Students will read a variety of genres including fiction, non-fiction, biographies, and poetry. The class novel this year is Percy Jackson: the Lightning Thief. We also practice and study for the NYS ELA Regents Examination.
In our religious studie, the students will look at the structure of The Bible, examine the people and events that took place in the Old Testament. We will also study the important events and holidays that take place throughout year, including the Liturgical Calendar. In addition, we will also study our class saint, Saint Gemma.
Sixth grade health curriculum focuses primarily on human development. These lessons explain aspects of anatomy and physiology, but mostly seek to explain the physical, mental, and emotional growth of the human body. Social-emotional learning is incorporated into all that we learn and do in the classroom. Topics will also cover emotional well-being, coping mechanisms, dealing with stress, deescalation strategies, and bullying.
In light of our "new normal" routines, information and knowledge about COVID-19 safety and prevention will also be touched on throughout the school year.
