Hello all! Welcome to my sixth grade class page. My name is Ms. Hughes and I am proud to be your child's teacher this year. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood and Childhood Education, as well as a minor in Deaf Studies and a concentration in History. I earned a Masters' Degree in Special Education 1-6. Teaching is something I have always wanted to do and I look forward to helping your children reach any personal and educational goals they may have this school year. I strive to provide a positive classroom enviornment, academic support and challenges, and a social atmosphere that encourages maturity and responsibility.
In sixth grade, students are ready to deepen their understanding of the Earth and its peoples through the study of history, geography, politics, culture, and economic systems. Through world history and geography, we grow an apprecation and understanding for human life and development, as we learn how the world today is shaped by our past.
Our course of study in language arts for sixth grade includes a combination of components, from reading and writing, to grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. Students will read a variety of genres including fiction, non-fiction, biographies, and poetry. The class novels this year are Percy Jackson: the Lightning Thief and The Egypt Game. We also practice and study for the NYS ELA Regents Examination in April.
In our religious studies, the students will look at the structure of The Bible, and examine the people and events that took place in the Old Testament. We will also study the important events and holidays that take place throughout the year, including the Liturgical Calendar. In addition, we will also study our class saint, Saint Gemma.
Sixth grade health curriculum focuses primarily on human development. These lessons explain aspects of anatomy and physiology, but mostly seek to explain the physical, mental, and emotional growth of the human body. Sixth grade is a year of change for the students and the health curriculum ties in nicely with that, Social-emotional learning is incorporated into all that we learn and do in the classroom. Topics will also cover emotional well-being, coping mechanisms, dealing with stress, deescalation strategies, and bullying.
