Welcome to 6th grade! My name is Miss Stolfi! I am your sixth grade math and science teacher. For 6-1 students, I also teach religion and health. I am a huge Yankees and Backstreet Boys fan, and I will reference them often during classtime. I danced for many years and taught multiple dance classes along with academic classes. I love all things purple, collecting nail polish and make up, and Starbucks. As the picture states, "In this classroom you are important, loved, respected. You are part of a team. You are valuable, listened to, and successful." I am excited for us to have a great year as you all enter middle school! We are going to have a wonderful year in room 325!

Mathematics
-
Sixth grade math develops proficiency in computational skills in decimals, ratios, fractions, and percent. Students will be introduced to the beginning steps of algebraic thinking using different expressions and equations. Students will strengthen their understanding of geometric and number skills. This is a challenging transitional period for sixth graders in math. The curriculum builds upon skills previously learned, while setting students up for success in future math classes. This knowledge is used to apply mathematics in real world settings. NYS Math Common Core Standards are followed.
This year sixth grade math students will be taking the NYS Math Assessment in May.

Physical Science
-
The curriculum focuses on Physical Science. Topics include matter, energy, atoms and the Periodic Table of Elements. Students will learn about chemistry and physics. The year will begin with students exploring the steps of the scientific method. Gaining a deeper understanding of the scientific method will enable students to develop their own science fair projects throughout the school year leading up to the science fair in January.

Sixth Grade Religion
-
The religion curriculum dovetails beautifully with the social studies curriculum. Students explore the roots of their religion in the Old Testament by tracing God’s loving care for the Hebrew people as they become the chosen people of God. Students study the origins of our Catholic holy days and their significance in today’s world. Students learn of their responsibility to the world community and to God’s creation.

6-1's Patron Saint: St. Martin of ToursSaint Martin of Tours was born in in Savaria, Pannonia in either the year 316 or 336 AD. Saint Martin is the patron of the poor, soldiers, conscientious objectors, tailors, and winemakers. His feast is on November 11. He commonly appears on horseback and is shown cutting his cloak in half with a sword.
At the age of fifteen, Martin was required to follow his father into the cavalry corps of the Roman military. As a young soldier, Martin encountered a beggar in Amiens. The beggar was unclothed and it was very cold. Martin removed his cloak and with his sword, he cut it in half. He gave this half to the beggar and dressed himself in the remnant. That night, Martin had a vision in which Christ appeared to him. The vision spoke to him, "Martin, a mere catechumen has clothed me." A catechumen is one who is being instructed in the Christian faith. In the early centuries of Christianity, that was a long process of instruction - and Martin was deeply dedicated to it.
About the age of 20, Martin made clear to his superiors that he would no longer fight, following his formed Christian conscience. He refused his pay prior to a battle and announced he would not join in the combat. He became the first recognized conscientious objector in recorded history. Now out of the military service, Martin could fully dedicate himself to service of Jesus Christ and the Church.
In 371, the city of Tours needed a new bishop and the people decided to call Martin to the office. Martin did not want the job so the people decided to trick him into the office. The people insisted he was needed to administer to someone sick, so he came out as quickly as he could. He did not even bother to improve his appearance. When he learned it was a trick to make him a bishop, Martin actually tried to hide. He was quickly discovered and the people called him forward to be ordained to the office of Bishop. Even though he did not really want the office, he was ordained - and he became a holy and hardworking Bishop.
Martin died in Candes-Saint-Martin, Gaul in 397.

Sixth Grade Health

Sixth grade health focuses on the social, emotional, and academic success of each student utilizing the Second Step program. Middle school is a time of change. Second Step helps teach powerful skills and competencies—like handling strong emotions, setting and meeting goals, making good decisions, and forging positive relationships—while building the safe, supported learning environment middle schoolers need to succeed. Activities will include class discussions, role play, group projects, reflective writing assignments, and unit assessments. Health will be taught once a week throughout the school year.
